Datuk Dr Mukundan Sugunan Pillay from Ministry of Health, Malaysia joins Editorial Advisory Board of Journal of Medical Device Regulation

London, July 2007 --- The Journal of Medical Device Regulation (JMDR), the international reference source in regulatory affairs for medical devices, announces that Datuk Dr Mukundan Sugunan Pillay, Deputy Director General of Health, Research and Technical Support at the Ministry of Health in Malaysia, has joined its Editorial Advisory Board. The announcement was made today by Victoria Clark, Editor of the quarterly publication, which reaches regulatory professionals in the US, Canada, the Middle East, Asia and Europe.

"We are delighted that Datuk Dr Pillay has agreed to join our Editorial Advisory Board", explains Victoria Clark. "He is a well-known and well-respected expert in the Asian regulatory community. His extensive knowledge and experience should enable us to strengthen the Journal's regulatory coverage of the region, as well as increasing the Journal's exposure in Asia."

Datuk Dr M S Pillay currently serves as the Deputy Director General for Research and Technical Support in the Ministry of Health, Malaysia. In this position he is responsible for planning and development, public health and medical research, engineering and environmental health services, traditional and complementary medicine, medical device regulations and drinking water quality. He is also the Director of the National Institutes of Health, comprising seven National Health Research Institutes. The Ninth Malaysia Plan for Health is planned and executed under his direction. Having graduated as a civil engineer, Datuk Dr Pillay went on to pursue his Masters in Public Health (MPH) and later completed his Doctorate in Preventive Medicine and Environmental Health. He has served as a consultant to the World Health Organisation (WHO) on numerous occasions on preventive health and environmental health. He is well known professionally in Malaysia and internationally and chairs numerous Technical Committees. Some of these include: Chairman of the ASEAN Consultative Committee for Standards and Quality (ACCSQ) Medical Device Product Working Group; Chairman of the Asian Harmonization Working Party for Medical Devices (AHWP); Co-Convenor of the ISO TC 224 International Standards Committee on Water and Wastewater; International Advisory Member of WHO International Committee on Non-Ionizing Radiation; Chairman of The National Strategic Plan on Waste Management; and Chairman of the National Standing Committee on Traditional and Complementary Medicine.
